Cabbage with tomato sauce

Absolutely simple, healthy and delicious meal with cabbage, that’s perfect for lunch or dinner.

Cabbage with tomato sauce is one of the easiest meals you’ll make. It’s made with just 6 ingredients and it doesn’t take a lot of time to make.This is a really delicious and healthy meal, that will impress you.

Cabbage is a really healthy vegetable, because it contains a lot of vitamins and minerals, that our body needs and doesn’t have many calories, because it contains a lot of water. We simply love cabbage, fresh one and sauerkraut and make it in so many different ways. But this meal is on our menu most frequently.

We like to eat this cabbage with mashed potatoes, but it’s also great with some pasta, we really love fettucine, that we mix with cabbage. We like to eat some delicious patty or tofu on the side. We always prepare tofu on the same way, first we marinate it in soy sauce and then fry in an airfryer.


As we mentioned, you only need 6 ingredients to make this amazing meal, and three of them are spices. You need:

  • fresh cabbage,
  • one onion,
  • tomato sauce,
  • salt,
  • black pepper,
  • cumin.

We sometimes add a quarter of an apple or a little bit of sugar, which makes this dish even better. So if you prefer it a bit sweeter, you’ll love this.

We try to use as little oil as possible while cooking, so we made this cabbage completely without oil. We don’t sautee onion in oil, instead of oil we use water and it works really well. We cover bottom of the pan with water and boil it. Then we add chopped onion and cook it until it gets soft and water completely evaporates. This way the meal is even healthier, has less calories and is completely fat free. If you prefer, you can also sautee onion on oil, it’s great either way.

Healthy, oil free cabbage with tomato sauce.
Servings 2 people


  • 1 onion
  • ½ head of cabbage 700g
  • 200 g tomato sauce
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • cumin


  • Heat water in a pan and add chopped onion when it's boiling. Cook for a few minutes until onion gets soft.
  • Add chopped cabbage, salt, pepper, cumin and a little bit of water. Close with a lid and cook until it gets soft (about 30 minutes).
  • When cabbage is cooked mix in tomato sauce and cook for about 5 minutes.
  • Serve with mashed potato or some pasta.
