Vegan tamales – Peruvian

Peruvian cuisine is known for its diversity and rich flavors, among which tamales are a real gem. This traditional cornmeal dish is popular throughout Latin America, but has a special place in Peru.

Tamales are made from corn dough, which is usually filled with various fillings – from meat, vegetables to cheeses. The preparation process is a true ritual: the mass is wrapped in corn or banana leaves and steamed. After steaming, the tamales are juicy and full of flavor.

There are different types of tamales found in Peru that vary by region. In the north of the country, where corn is especially valued, tamales are often filled with meat and rich spices. Meanwhile, in the south, where the influences of Andean culture are stronger, tamales incorporate local ingredients such as potatoes and other grains.

Sweet versions can be filled with raisins, cinnamon or other sweet additions and are often served as a dessert. We veganized the recipe and made delicious vegan tamales with vegan “chicken” and vegetables.

This tradition strengthens bonds and enables the exchange of recipes and techniques that have been passed down through the generations.

Tamales are not only delicious, but also very nutritious, which makes them great for breakfast, lunch or as a snack. Tamales are usually served hot, often with toppings like salsa verde, guacamole, or sour cream. You can also combine them with rice or beans to create a rich and nutritious dish. Tamales are more than just food; they are part of culture, tradition and community. Their versatility and rich history make them a must-try dish for every food lover.
