Vegan guide to Madrid, Spain

The vegan offer in Madrid is extremely diverse! There are tons of completely vegan restaurants with a variety of amazing dishes, from traditional Spanish dishes like paella, churros, cachopo, papas bravas to wraps, burgers, desserts, donuts and more! Even many non-vegan restaurants have vegan dishes on the menu. In this post I’m sharing with you the restaurants and dishes that I tried during my visits to Madrid!

Spanish cuisine is one of the most diverse and colorful in Europe, with a rich history shaped by many cultures and influences. If you are going to Spain, you should definitely take the time to try their food! Some of the most famous dishes are paella, potato tortilla, churros, papas bravas. If you are wondering where you can try all these dishes in a vegan version, keep on reading.

1. Hakuna Matata Veggie – 100% vegan

Hakuna Matata Veggie is a 100% vegan restaurant that has traditional Spanish dishes on the menu and they are extremely delicious! I tried:

  • vegan paella – paella is a Spanish dish that originates from Valencia and is prepared in a shallow pan, made of rice, vegetables, spices and meat, but of course it can be made in vegan versions. The paella at Hakuna Matata even had a vegan substitute for squid and shrimps and was really tasty!
  • papas bravas – crispy fried potatoes with a spicy sauce, a simple dish that can be found in practically every Spanish restaurant and is usually served as a side dish and
  • cachopo – a fried dish originating from the north of Spain, made of two layers of meat substitute, with cheese in between them.

2. Sanissimo – 100% vegan

Sanissimo is also a completely vegan restaurant with a very pleasant cozy atmosphere and an excellent offer. I tried 2 dishes here:

  • taquitos – the plate consists of 6 taquitos with three different fillings (vegan mozzarella, cheddar and bacon) and 3 different dipping sauces. Taquitos are really tasty and perfectly seasoned!
  • wrap – the wrap is richly filled with a vegan meat substitute, lots of vegetables and a homemade sauce.

3. Mad Mad Vegan – 100% vegan

Mad Mad Vegan has 2 locations in Madrid and one in Barcelona and, as the name suggests, it has a completely vegan offer! On the menu they have burgers, tacos, wraps, onion rings, calamari and desserts. I tried:

  • wrap with a vegan substitute for minced meat and
  • fried sweet potatoes with homemade dipping sauce, both extremely delicious!

4. Freedom Cakes Cafe – 100% vegan

If you have a sweet tooth, the offer in Madrid is excellent for you! Freedom Cakes Cafe is a vegan pastry shop that offers coffees, breakfasts, desserts, cakes, fresh pastries and also lunches. The pastry shop is very lively, with colorful decor and tables and is quickly noticed when you walk down the street! I kept buying pastries for breakfast there, because they were so delicious! I tried:

  • cinnamon roll,
  • chocolate pastry,
  • breakfast croissants (one with vegan ham and cheese and one with jam).

5. Distrito Vegano Invernadero – 100% vegan

Distrito Vegano Invernadero is a 100% vegan restaurant with many traditional Spanish dishes on the menu. They also offer breakfast and desserts. Here I tried a slightly special dish:

  • baked tortillas in sauce – extremely tasty and very juicy dish!

6. Vegamazing – 100% vegan

A few meters away from the previous restaurant, on the same street, there is Vegamazing – a vegan donut shop with a huge variety of flavors, so it’s quite difficult to decide which one to try as all of them look amazing! The donuts are handmade and very fluffy and delicious. They offer a variety of donuts, from classic ones, to those with glazes and even more richly filled with various fillings and toppings! The donuts are quite large, so even those with only a glaze are filling enough. I tried:

  • american donut with cappuccino topping.

6. Chocolateria 1902

If you are in Spain, you must try churros – a dessert consisting of fried strips of dough, similar to pancake batter, which is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They are usually served with thick hot chocolate dip. At Chocolateria 1902 you can try traditional churros. Not all of the dishes there are vegan, but they do offer:

  • vegan churros with vegan hot chocolate – the perfect combination!

7. Los Andenes Vegan – 100% vegan

Los Andenes Vegan is a vegan Peruvian restaurant where they offer Peruvian dishes in a vegan version! The dishes taste divine and are very beautifully presented. I tried quite a few dishes here, two different appetizers, which are also gluten-free:

  • Papa a la huancaina – sliced potatoes topped with huancaina sauce – the sauce was so great that I simply had to make it at home and so I created my own recipe, which is published here!
  • Causa rellena – cold potato wedges seasoned with lemon and yellow chili, stuffed with vegan tuna and vegan mayonnaise.

In addition, I tried two other main dishes:

  • Mostrito – chaufa rice (I also tried to make this dish myself and created the recipe!), crispy milanesa and baked banana, combined with an oriental sauce made from Chinese cinnamon and ginger.
  • Aji de “gallina” – a slightly spicy Peruvian cream sauce with mushrooms, served with rice.

8. Arco Iris

Another traditional Spanish dish is potato tortilla, which can be eaten for lunch, dinner or breakfast. I tried it  at the Arco Iris restaurant, which has a separate vegan menu! The tortilla was extremely delicious – crispy on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside!

9. Pizzeria Carlos

This pizzeria has an amazing vegan pizza! I tried one with vegan minced meat and it was incredible. They also offer vegan “chicken” pizza and vegan nuggets.

Spanish breakfast

For breakfast in Spain they usually eat tostadas – toasted bread with some topping. In practically every restaurant you can get bread with tomatoes, which can be topped with olive oil, salt and pepper and is an excellent and simple breakfast.
